Anyone netted a large area ? I'm considering doing one of the terraces here around 30' x 20' in an effort to keep out the pests. The main problem being it's visible from the house so I'd rather it didn't look some off cuts cobbled together.

I have a high raised bed for my Brussel sprouts. It took more than 1 width of debris netting so I sowed 2 together using fine fishing line. This worked quite well and you don't see the joins unless you look quite closely. It takes a bit of time, and a 20ft width would need a number sown together!

The budget certainly doesn't run that much ! I have to do something though - this morning when I watered the top greenhouse I had 8 Kids orange red apples left on my 3 tier espalier, tonight I've locked up and there's just 1 left. plus the 1/2 eaten one on the floor.
At this rate I will get absolutely nothing from my 32 fruit trees this year.
Bird netting is available in large width's and length it's the frame which is causing a problem, I really didn't want the chunky wood look with 3x3 posts and 2" rails I could use angle iron but galv isn't exactly budget friendly, suppose I could paint mild steel.

Bit more research and things are looking more promising.
Glav tube size A (26.9mm so not too chunky) looks to be around £1/foot delivered with the tube clamp connectors around £3 each, not a cheap project but no where near the price of ready made cages.

I'm using 50x50mm painted & treated posts set in small metposts, linked with battens at the top. So exactly the look you're not looking for! Using an old door innards to make the door to the cage. Approx 4m x 4m and 2.2m high (cage, not door!). The posts are also being used as supports for tayberries & espaliers.Last edited by sparrow100; 18-06-2017, 08:13 PM.http://mudandgluts.com - growing fruit and veg in suburbia
