Chain Advice needed please.

I have 4 hanging baskets for my toms but they are too high up to water or pick from comfortably so I thought about using extension chains to lower them by about 6ins. The brackets they dangle on cannot be moved.

I had a look on fleabay and just got very, very confused about the types and sizes of chain available.

Local DIY shed should have something suitable that you can have a proper look at. Check the chain is closed loop rather than open, that means the loops are welded together and cannot open up.

I had a go with pull down thingies last year and on the second pull as it were 2 of them just kept on going as the string thingy (see another tech term) unrolled itself from the inside spindle thingy.

I also need, just to be difficult, something I can order in as we no longer have transport which means our access to shops is very, very limited.

What about a little box to stand on?
I have a stool, like this, but from L1dl that lives in the garden. It great for standing or sitting on, resting the washing basket or bucket on and isn't too high that I feel giddy.

Screwfix do a full range of chains, D-shackles snap hooks etc.

All so have a look at turnbuckles and S-hooks.

All can be ordered on line to get round your transport problems

Cannot use a stool as the floor is very sloped.

Would nylon cord work on hook thingies (like Potty said)? At least it could be cut to length.

One thing to think about - the longer the chain, the more the basket will move in the wind. Just in case its near summat that could be damaged by a swinging basket!

^^^^^^^That's one of the reasons I suggested to have a look at turnbuckles, you can get them about 6" long made of solid steel with an hook on either end.

What you need is something called Jack Chain which is used in my trade (electrical) to hang lighting. Each link is removeable with a pair of pliers.

That jack chain isn't designed to carry much weight, a wet hanging basket is likely to end up on the floor as the links are open and the 2mm wire bends fairly easily(another ex sparky)
