  • Railway oak sleepers?

    Hello everyone!

Me and the hubby have decided to start a small project in the garden, we are after some Railway sleepers for raised beds/planters. Can anyone recommend a company for these?

We have purchased sleepers in the past but they weren't straight! So any supplier ideas would be appreciated!

I'd have a phone round among your local farmers - I found one when I was needing some beams for a building project, he had a small mill for cutting timber from his own woodland. Transport costs are a large element of the price on this stuff as wood is heavy and bulky. If you meet the person selling the timber, they are likely to take pride in their product.

      Hi Both and welcome.
Can't help with recommending a retailer - there seem to be lots around so I'd choose on the nearest and price.
I thought that most wood would change shape during the process of drying out and that imperfections, including bendiness are to be expected unless one pays a premium for aged timber.
Have you considered something like Woodblox ?

As said above, the biggest cost with sleepers is normally the transport so local is best. Where abouts in the country are you?

            Hi all,

Thank you all for your replies, we are in the East Midlands. We have used oak sleepers in the past and they seem to work wonders in the garden especially for DIY

We have checked a coupl companies and so far it looks like we are going to try a local company as they were cheapest!

Fingers crossed, I will let you all know how it went!

You might try Oakdale Fencing and see how their prices compare. They were the cheapest I could find when I bought 10 oak sleepers last year.

You can buy new treated "railway sleepers" from builders yards, I built mine with them, nice and straight and not covered in creosote, I used these perfect for the job.

There was some talk of issues from the preservative leaching out into growing beds from old sleepers

I fixed plastic ie tanked it, on one that I used near raspberries
