Is black garden fabric any good

My husband is trying to do the garden while I'm unable to do it we have threerolls of black garden fabric would this be OK to put over a rough area to kill the grass and weeds so the area can be used at a later date.

if it is the cheapy fabric stuff that pops up in the diy and cheapy stores it is rubbish don't use it. If it is the heavy woven type fabric you'll be fine.

Even if it is the good stuff, IMO it still needs cardboard/thick layer of newspaper under it, if you expect it to keep out all the light and kill existing weeds.

It stops weeds growing if laid over bare soil, but not so good on its own to kill them, I found.
