Water Butt - Anyone know of "teat dip"?

I'm currently on the look out for some 200ish litre barrels to make into water butts (I had a previous thread saying I was going to use an IBC, but it all changed lol). Usually people want silly money for them or they're far away, but someone local to me is selling them £12-14 a pop depending on colour.

They were used to contain stuff called "teat dip". I've previously avoided buying barrels that used to contain toxic things as they don't look easy to wash properly. Has anyone heard of teat dip and can tell me how toxic it might be and how hard it would be to clean? I've Googled it a lot but haven't found much really.

Do you know what was in the teat dip? Looks like there are lots of varieties, some clearly not particularly noxious once you've rinsed them out, others I wouldn't like to say. They're likely to be all right once you've given them a good rinse, but better safe than sorry. Here's a brief piece on teat dips covering some of the options, but you really need to know which one to be sure of what you need to research regarding toxicity.

I know my parents used a teat dip for the dairy cows on the farm back home. It was slightly tainted so hat you'd easily know whether you'd 'dipped' a cow or not. It was done to keep the teats healthy, moisturised and probably a slight disinfectant. Not sure if that helps, but that's all I can remember.

I've looked a bit closer at the photos and the barrels have got MASOCARE EXTRA printed on the side, which seems to be an iodine based dip. I don't know much about what chemicals are particularly bad for plants, but a data sheet I've found says that if you ingest the product them medical care is only required if it causes discomfort.

Sounds like it's not that bad?

By the look of it, it isn't environmentally hazardous though it does kill bacteria. So might not be great for soil bacteria. Give it a jolly good swish about and dispose of the waste water somewhere where it isn't going to affect someone's plot. Unlikely to be a very high concentration of the product in the waste water but even so, better safe than sorry.
