Today I took apart a couple of old microwave ovens so as to reuse some of the components in different projects. When I had removed the doors I saw, or rather I felt with my fingertips, that the black dot pattern on the door wasn't etched but was a very fine mesh making up the front of the door. I carefully removed the glass pane and found that there remained a rigid panel of fine holes covered with what appeared to be a thin layer of some transparent material. This turned out to be some transparent plastic which was easily peeled off leaving me with a shallow tray with a finely perforated base. I tried it out on some seed potting mix and it gave me a very fine layer in the receiving tray. Might even be suitable for sowing fine seed
