Onion Sets

Well Today, Me and mum Planted the 1st Onion Sets, we have a 1.8x2mtr bed of 50 Red Onions and a 50 bag Mixed lot of Red, White and Brown. (Basic Wilko)
Will these grow as usual even though not planted to sprout before planting.

I plan on doing same again in two week but planting them in cells and waiting till 3 'leaves' have come in and planting them, this will help with crop harvesting? Delays and such so It doesn't all ripen at same time?

Not quite sure what you mean. Do you mean can you plant them direct? If that is your question the answer is yes. Why would you plant them in "cells" and then disturb and move them?. When they are ready pull them, dry them and they will keep for months either plaited or boxed or just dumped under the greenhouse staging. Why stagger them? You seem to be making extra work for yourself.

Be aware, red onions are notorious for bolting/flowering so keep an eye on them next year and be ready to pull them up and use immediately.

T'was a question hence the post into new shoots, SO I have them in the ground so with onion no need to stagger, thank you.
and bolting no issue, I can have the scapes too, will be diced and likely frozen if not needed immediately.

IMO starting onion sets off in cells is only worth doing if the soil is too cold/wet to plant them out when planned.
Autumn sown onions don't store well so need to be used when ready - which is a bonus because you can lift an onion to use whenever you like - whatever size you fancy.

Is it overwintering onions that you have planted? If it is then yes they can be planted directly into the ground but I don't have any issues at all with planting in cell packs and planting out later.

If it isn't overwintering varieties then sorry to say that it's unlikely that they will survive the winter.
