What do you want the downpipe for - watering or for house rainwater drainage?

I would just plant it in the soil as it comes.

The roots will grow to find their own water, and any direct contact with air will more than likely dry out any roots. If you need to water the trees (probably only necessary twice in the first year if its a dry one), then just water the soil around the roots.
