I always plant shallots in spring. I don't know how they will do if you leave them. They aren't usually available to buy until spring but if you save your own it's customary to store them until Feb/March time.
I'm not aware of any variety you can plant in autumn like there are with onions - could be wrong though - it's happened before!Last edited by Flummery; 13-10-2007, 02:17 PM.Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.

Some varieties of shallots can be planted in Autumn and some in Spring! I had a good harvest this year from Spring planted shallots, but may plant a few of my own saved bulbs soon, just as trial, with the majority planted in Spring! My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order
to present to him vegetables and all beautiful flowers.- Offerings of Thutmose III to Amon-Ra (1500 BCE)

I've just taken delivery of my order from the Garlic Farm and it included some eschalotte grise - shallots to plant in autumn! D'oh! I must have ordered these about 3 weeks ago and had totally forgotten. Old Timers' Disease I reckon. Poor old thing!Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.

I'd leave them - then you can be the authority on how well they do ! If they don't work out, you can always plant more in the spring.

Good. The planting instructions did say to hang them to dry, not leave them in the ground. I'm looking forward to trying them. Will try to get them in tomorrow.Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.
