Fleece will keep the flies out, but in the summer it can be too warm (in my experience).

Use your judgement depending on when the carrots are to be grown - early crops under fleece, late crops under enviromesh.

i find that foxes etc rip through fleece easily, enviromesh is tougher. so your local wildlife will also be a factor
but also your budget, enviromesh is quite expensive but if looked after will last for years.

Arn't marigold good to deter Carrot Fly. We didn't suffer with CF this year but my plot neighbousr did. We planted marigolds and quite a few other flowers. Pest wise apart from the odd caterpillar and slug in greenhouse we did ok.

I don't know if it was a coincidence, but my veg plot was bordered with marigolds and I had no carrot fly or caterpillars - as soon as the marigolds died off, the caterpillars arrived in droves. MInd you, they didnt deter the slugs ....

Another thought - isn;t it too late for carrot fly? (I don't ask from experience btw, but for clarification!)

Apparently carrot fly are onl about until the end of September?

I have grown my carrots under enviromesh all season and they are still under it and still growing.

I tried fleece last year but didn't leave enough slack on it for when they grew and the tops pushed up and grew through the fleece!

Maybe this year's weird weather has had an effect on them as well as everything else?
