Welcome to the Vine, Lavenderblue. Take your time clearing the lottie - if you try and rush it you'll wear yourself out. It's better to clear an area thoroughly and plant it with stuff you want and leave the rest cut down and covered until you can get to it. Have fun.

Turnips!!?? Far too fancy! We're still praising the good old Mangle Worzel here in Lincolnshire!

Mangle Worzels are SO last century in Leicestershire. I think the next big thing will be parsnips.

Hi LB, I am also in Leicester (Humberstone) and agree, parsnips are going to be the next big thing here in, closely followed by quality Bordeaux. A truely luxurious county indeed.

Hmmm ... Bordeaux Leeestair (french for Leicester) ........ doesn't quite have the right ring about it somehow.

Ooops sorry Lavenderblue - meant to say welcome to the Vine!

Hi and welcome Lavenderblue. Parsnips are a big thing in my garden. I dug up one yesterday that weighed 2lb!

I wish you loads of fun on your lottie, tons of good eating and of course, a very Happy Christmas.

Good luck with your new allotment.Good advice from rustylady and take your time. With a new plot I take the top off with a spade remembering to shake the topsoil free, rough dig it, then plant all spuds in the Spring. This will clean the ground and prevent weeds at the same time. After you harvest your potatos you will still have time to grow lettuce, summer cabbage, savoys, carrots etc.
Most important dont forget to leave an area free by putting down a membrane with wood chips perhaps to sit down with a cup of tea and admire your work.
                          regards

Wow I used to live in Countesthorpe What a small world

Whereabout is your lottie? Cant remember offhand where they were?

I lived there for 8 years behind the Railway Pub, left there when I was 18 due to a family move (one of several). Have been back twice and still call it my second home and would move back in a trice if I didnt have so many family still living up here.

                              Anyway, welcome to the vine

                                ohhhh blimey, small world indeed.

there are two lots of lotties in Countersthorpe, one lot on Peatling Drive and the other, where ours is, is near the drive, where the children's homes used to be.

By some mad irony, i have just driven past Cramlington this very day. I am also very excitied because you live in the same town that my comedy hero, Ross Noble is from. I might love him a little bit.

Just want to say a huge thank you to all who have given me some excellent advice on how to tame our patch of earth. I will get posting pictures when the key is sorted out (attempt number 3 to make the damn thing fit) and see what happens
