  • Horse Manure

    I got a large bag of horse manure from one of the old boys at the end of the village about six months ago, who produces some superb veggies during the year.

    Just dug it into my veg patch, hard work but job done. It was odourless and had lots of worms, which I assume is fine.

    Ok here are the questions;

    How long should I wait before attempting to sow/plant any veg?

    Do I need to leave it to the elements, or should I cover it up with old carpet/black plastic, or is it time-wise a bit of both?

    Hi and welcome to the vine.

    It sounds like it was already well rotted so you probably don't need to wait to plant (except that it is a bit early for much yet). Read the seed packets and keep an eye on the 'what I did today thread' to see when it is time to start planting. Good luck with it all.

      I go with Shirl.
      By the time you're ready to plant outside (3 months or so yet), it'll be just perfect.

        Thanks Shirl and Two-Sheds.

        One more question. Should I just leave it be for the next few months, or is it better to dig it over regularly (if so, how often)?

        It sounds like time to get those catalogues out then with a cup of char....

          I think it is best to leave the soil alone now and rake it smooth at planting time. If you get a copy of Dr Hessayon's 'Vegetable and Herb Expert' it gives good instructions on how to prepare your soil.
