I've grown red sun for several years - a lovely shallot. I usually don't plant till march - just store cool and dry. They have a really delicate pink colour when peeled - red's pushing it a bit! I'd always try not to grow them in deep shade but they don't really need a full sun position if you can't provide one.

Never grown them, but thinking of the Japanese flag I can guess where they originate!
