  • Early Season Activities

    Hi
I got my plot last year at the begin of April. The 2007 growing season was successful in general despite the bad weather and slugs. We are still harvesting some brussels, cabbages & leeks now. I have used the winter months to prepare the plot and I am happy its will be ready to receive plants and seeds.

Here starts my problems, I do not know when I can start to grow on seeds for transplanting later as plugs and when I can sow directly under cover i.e fleece and cloches. I live in Berkshire so we are in the south and I have the following resources available to me. 2 x permanment cold frames on the plot, 1 x fleece poly tunnel, 1 x plastic poly tunnel, loose fleece sheeting. At home we have no proper greenhouse but do have a small timber plant house like this:

What advice can anyone pass on, to allow for early planting or transplant preparations.

    Kindest Rgds Andy

Well, it depends what you want to grow...

What types of veg are you planning?

I start most of my veggies off in cell trays at home. Apart from root veg like carrots, parsnips. I have a cold greenhouse, kitchen windowsills and a small heated propagator which lives in the outhouse. I've started off onion seeds this year, will soon be sowing summer sprouting broccoli, and I'm going to start my onion sets in cells. Next month I will be sowing loads.

        We have plans to grow:
Brassicas: Swede, Cabbages, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Brussels
        Roots: Carrots, Potatoes, Parsnips, Shallots
        Legumes: Runner Beans, French beans
Other: Chard, Mixed Salad leaves, Leeks, Tomatoes, Radish, Salad Onions
        courgettes, Squashes

Ideally I would like to get where possible crops off to as early start, but I am not sure
when to do this without risking stunting the plants.
