  • What is this plant?

    Hi All

I planted seeds last year in trays, then put them into a seed bed and they grew and then they overwintered without dying which is amazing as I paid them no attention and then this year I kind of wonder what they are...as I can't remember what I planted. Possible bergamot or borage as they are the only things that come to mind.

Anyway I've now tansplanted these plants all over the garden and thought I had better find out what they are. Anyone got any ideas?

They've not flowered yet at all so not sure of those details.

Looks like a primula to me but I'm very probably wrong.

I don't remember having any primula seeds last year. I wish I would label things more often. Been making a conscious effort to do that this year. So often though the ink fades in the sunlight and so after a few months unless you have a good memory, which I don't, you don't know what you've planted. I think it will probably flower this year which will help identify it.

It also looks a little like my verbascum but whereas those leaves seem pointed, mine are rounded. Good luck finding out anyway, I'm sure someone will have a better idea than me.

Eskymo It looks a bit like borage, especially if you think it might be. I googled for images and found this that looks similar. Okay, so this one says it has an iron deficiency

I have these growing in my garden and I had borgae last year froma wild seed pack I planted so maybe that answers my question too

            I didn't think to Google...oops.

            But maybe it is borage.

But I'm actually thinking now that I might have got the plants along with a mini cherry tree that a friend gave me as I seem to remember she said some plant was growing at the base of the plant in the pot it was in and it's worth keeping them.

I checked the cherry tree today and there are no small plants at the bottom of it so I wonder if these are the plants that I transplanted, which means they could be anything. I'm going to email her and see if she remembers, but as she's had a baby recently and her brain has turned to sponge [ happens apparently] she probably won't know either...I'm going to wait for it to flower.

It's a foxglove. They are biannual. Green shoots the first year, which will over winter then it flowers in the second year.
You know the saying "Walks like a duck, Talks like a duck then it has to be a duck" Well your photo can be nothing other than one of a foxglove. As soon as I saw it I recognised it.

cool...it must be what my friend gave me then as I've never planted foxgloves in my life...I've trnasplanted them all around my border and in the wild part at the back of the garden - they're going to look lovely - can't wait.

It's going to be a surprise whatever they are! I will keep you all posted.

back to the original question, in my opinion that is foxglove...they do die off then come back even stronger year by year.

would be interested to see what the others are?

Eskymo - looks like my borage. Are they related plants?
