removing rose bush roots

Hi All,

First time allotmenter. I now have a rare piece of land with no block of flats in SE London! Waited for 2 years for an allotment and am happy to have one - even if it is in a bit of a state.

It has a massive rose bush right in the middle which i have cut down and about 6 or 7 smaller ones surrounding it. The roots go on and on forever!

Does anyone have any advice on getting rid of them. I am digging like mad and geting no where fast. i am happy to keep going but worry about leaving bits of rrot that can grow back.

Any advice appreciated!

I've removed several overgrown and exhausted looking efforts from this garden. When you get to the long taproot that seems to go on forever, you can just hack it off. It doesn't re-grow - at least, mine never have. As long as you can dig a spade's worth of soil for cultivation purposes, the stuff doen below shouldn't bother you.
