  • My first potatoes and other things

    Hi all, me again.....

Just found out I'm number 2 on the waiting list for a lottie!!! Risen from 6th to 2nd since the beginning of December, however, January was renewal month so there may not be much movement here after......

Anyway, bit of advice, I've bought some Pentland Javelin and a potato planter to put them into on the patio. If I just stand the seed potatoes on a tray in a bright cool room will they chit or do I need some way of balancing them upright? I haven't managed to get my hands on any eggboxes or apple trays etc.

Also, because the weather was so glorious last weekend I planted 8 Rondo peas and a few Bedfordshire Champion Onions into little seed module thingies, and I've kept them in the utility room all week, how often should I be watering them and have I started too early....I got all enthusiastic!

    Thanks as always

      Hi LumpyJ,

I don't think I've said this before so "welcome".

I would have thought that if you stuff them all together in a container they will lean on each other and stay upright that way.

If you're anything like me, by next year your utility room/workshop in my case will be full of old toilet rolls, egg boxes, mushroom containers, lolly sticks.....

I've been collecting the toilet roll inners and my plastic fizzy pop bottles (for making cloches again!) Makes a nice change for the utility room to be cluttered with my stuff and not Mr LJ's!!!! He's already got the entire garage, why oh why must he also use inside the house as well! LOL!

the best thing is though its that you loose half of your stuff in there so you end up buying twice as much and your room gets fuller(is that a word) and then you loose more stuff etc etc its a conspiracy by the gardening shops/supermarkets

Thought it was just me - I have about 3 carrier bags of odd socks! when the menfolk shout that they have no socks they are given the bags and told to go sort them!

Washing machines and tumble driers not only eat socks but also change their colour, It also doesn't help if one's dear husband only wears black or navy blue socks!!! I have no idea what matches with what so they get thrown on the bed and he has to sort them, often they remain there for months!!!!

Anyway, back to my spuds, so if I group them together so they stand up that will work better? I'could prop them up in an empty ice cream tub....

What about my peas and onions should I be keeping the compost damp???

sorry. i have no idea about your peas and onions as i find it a lot easier to by onion sets and i just saw peas straight from the packet(have been told loads of wierd and wonderfull things about what to do to peas. the spuds should be fine like that i did it last year but would prefer to have them so they are not touching each other(personal choice nothing more)

Maybe I should put the spuds into the odd socks that would be more interesting wouldn't it they could sit happily upright in an assortment of navy blue and black socks.....
