What should I do with the water in my water butt? It doesn't smell too fresh - is it OK to use on plants, or might it carry problems of some sort?

A few grains of Permanganate of potash should keep it sweet if it hasn't gone too ransid, dont use too much or you'll end up with purple water.I you'st to have a handle on the world .. but it BROKE!! -

I can't think why else it would smell.

yes, they get a sprinkle of fish food in the summer, just a little not enough to foul the water. They have pondweed and larvae to eat too. No, I guessed that the water has just stood for about 4 - 5 months and has started to go smelly like stagnant water does! I had wondered if I ought to drain it now, and let it fill up again with fresh water.Comment

You should be able to buy something called Refresh at your local garden centre. It is a kind of mild sterilising liquid exactly for this purpose. Added regularly to a water butt it will hep keep the water sweet. It seems to work with ours.Comment
