  • Hello everyone!

Hello! Just joined today. Have been browsing the site for a couple of months and decided to join in the fun! Relatively new to veg growing, but having fun trying and getting some OK stuff! Had an allotment for 2 years, but I've barely scratched the surface. Me v the weeds! - not to mention the slugs!! Any advice on how to grow sprouts and cabbages would be really welcome. Cheers, Joolz

Hi, Joolz, welcome to the forum. You may find it useful when you get a bit of spare time to use the search function, then you can selectively look over past threads to gain some extra knowledge. The search button is on the green band at the top of this page just under where it says 'Welcome, Joolz'.
I you'st to have a handle on the world .. but it BROKE!!

          Welcome

Hi Joolz, welcome to the forum.
Re sprouts, no chance as I hate them, and first year of cabbages so no help there either. In fact, no help whatsoever but enjoy this place anyway, some most knowledgable sorts will give you a full brassica run down soon I have no doubt.

Welcome to the madhouse oft refferred to by the grapes as the 'vine!

We are now just entering our second year of growing from 2 plots, and are still eating cabbages and sprouts from plot 1, so we've had reasonable sucess with them this year! Good luck with the battles re the weeds and slugs, its a never ending struggle on our plot too, but hopefully this year should be a little easier than last as we're getting on top of the perenials a bit now!

Tips, make sure they are well established and hardened off before planting out, protect them from wind at first if your in an exposed location, and definitely protect them from birds and rabbits with netting! Oh, and make sure you really firm up the bed they are going in, they wont heart up otherwise! We did about 30 white cabbages and about 12 red cabbages, and still have a few to harvest, in fact I'm off down the plot in a bit to harvest some veg for todays roast tea!

Welcome to the vine Joolz! I grew sprouts and cabbages this year on clubroot infested land. I grew clubroot resitant cabbages which not only taste nice but stand a long time (still have some standing now) This year I am trying clubroot resistant cauli's.
Sprouts were ok for me but the ones that appreciated them most were next doors hens when I gave them the few remaining plants with blown sprouts on to munch on this week!
God loves a trier though and I'm growing one F1 variety and one Heritage self saved seed variety this year to hedge my bets!

Good luck with your brassicas and remember they like firm alkaline soil!
