As a temporary measure, use some electrical tape in a bright colour. It won't really take the 'point' off the cane, but you do tend to notice it before it goes in your eye.

I once poked my eye with the leaf of an orchid - it actually cut the surface of my eye and I had to wear a (not very glamourous) cotton wool eye patch for several days!
