  • Newbies have a look

I would like to help newbies like myself.
Ok now i have been reading a book called Homegrown by keith mossman and mary norwak, it is from 1977 but has good info still for today. it tell you how to grow cook and preserve, also how much to grow for the average family so i will tell you what it says, i guess the average family is 2.4 kids if you have more increase less decrease.

now i will start with root crops
Beetroot- 30ft/9m should yield 20lb/10kg of mature roots plus thinnings.
Carrots- 2x30ft row should yield enough for summer harvesting and storage.
PotatoesMaincrop- 30ft will yield about 30lb 10kg.Dont aim to be selfsufficient in potatoes at the cost of other valuable crops.

Tomatoes-In a good season 3-4lb/1.5-2kg can be expected form 1 plant the main yield will be consantrated in a stort period so only plant 6-8 plants.
peppers-it says plant 6 outdoors and 3 inside just in case

there are so many different veg in this book you should get a copy i loaned mine from the library and is worth a look for newbies and old hands.
