  • Garden Pics From Last Year

In my thread asking for advice on my sickly lawn a couple of forumites asked to see some pics of the little garden once the grass was "better" - so i have attached a couple of shots from last "summer" - not taken under ideal light but you get the idea. sunny days were few and far between to be picky about the light!

the garden is a small cottage garden at the back of my house, which used to be a 16th century farm house. the brickwork you can see is mostly 1700s though - as for the horrid windows... don't ask. some previous tosspot "owner" had lots of "improvements" done most of which were out of character with the building and not even done well.

i have been living there about 18 months now and i wish that i had taken a couple of pics of the garden how it was when i started - every square millimetre you can see (and plenty more behind the camera that you can't) was covered in gravel and/or thick concrete and swamped with ivy and weeds (i didn't even know i owned a victoria plum tree until i began to cut back the ivy as it was so overgrown!) and the whole lot was cleared by hand... with pick, shovel and sledgehammer...

    my back still aches...

How gorgeous. I would love to have a 'cottage garden' style border up one area of the garden but I am unsure how to start - is it worth trying those packs of mixed seeds or did you buy individual plants?

Lovely piccies Storm. And yes the blue one IS Borage, self seeds well.
Shirley depending on the amount of garden to be 'Cottage Gardened', you can get some very pretty seed mixtures, 'Mixed Colours' or 'Themed' (whites, pinks, blues etc.)

Thanks Wellie, I have some seed mixtures but wondered whether they would do the job or if I needed to be more organised about it. Will maybe give them a go this year.

Just keep an eye on the seed mixes that the vigorous seeds don't grow and overwhelm the smaller/slower growers. I've started seed mixes in trays, which kind of defeats the ease of them, but you can prick them out easily and make sure as much as possible grows. (I'm mean I like to get my money's worth!)

                      Nice piccies storm btw.
