  • lawn is full of weeds

I re-vamped my garden last year, and put a new lawn in by seed, i used different types of seed which really seemed to have worked,
but looking at it now there seems to be loads of weeds and bold patches,
can anyone tell me if it's ok to weed and seed it ? and when should i do this,
i'm worred as it's less than a year old.

I would say dig it up and sow a wildflower mix, but then I hate lawns! Maybe I'm not the best person to answer this...

I'm with you birdie but I hate lawns as well

Maybe you could compromise and just re-sow the bald bits with wildflower seeds and then mow a winding path thru it and let the rest grow into a hay meadow. If you use the right mix you can attract Birds, Insects and Bats to the garden and it will look far better than a green desert

I'd think there are two things you need to do. The first is removal of perrenial weeds such as dandilions. In my lawn these get everywhere and feed and weed won't kill these off. I use an old pair of hedge clippers pushed down under the root and lifted to get the weed out. The second is the feed and weed. Its perhaps a bit early right now, waiting a few more weeks might be more beneficial. Following the instructions on your product you'll need to rake out the dead weeds once the killer has done its job.

I'd say for an established lawn you would introduce a third step after weeding out by hand. This is raking the exsiting thatch and moss. Its hard work but means any F&W you apply will have more imapct on whats left. Mow it first then once raked run the mower over it again to pick up any bits the rake didn't get. Your lawn will look hideous for a couple of weeks but its better in the long run.

Also don't forget to cut the lawn from now onwards. If it gets too long you'll only encouage the type of lawn you don't want. Good luck

Forgot to say don't rake your new lawn too hard. You don't want to pull out the new grass

            thanks Matt,
It's only a small lawn for the kids, as i'm not much for lawns myself, but i can't see my son play football on a bed of wildflower. i have raised flower beds for colour.
