Biggest mistakes in 1st year

My biggest mistake was thinking that my soil was good enough, simply because it has a nice color! actually nothing has grown, and I just ran to the shop and bought a few books to get a bit more science behind my will !
Know a lot more now but still this is my first real year of growing veg so I know that there will be a huge difference between the garden I have in my imagination and the one which will actually be!

Last year was my first year and although I planned where I wanted things, I didn't plan very well, as there's no easy way to do crop rotation now. So as much as possible I'm going to forget last year and plant things in groups this year so it won't be so higgledy piggledy where I can put things.
My purple sprouting broccoli was doing just fine until I transplanted it to elsewhere on the plot, so this year I'll leave it alone.
Not realising how quickly slugs can eat a crop of fresh new salad seedlings. I didn't have any protection for them. One evening they were there, the next day they were not. That was depressing because it was the first things that I had sown and first to pop up.

I forgot to sow my sweetcorn. And to sow more than 1 lot of lettuce or spring onions.
One really good thing I had heard when I was JUST starting was to only dig one section at a time, do it really well, and then plant it up immediately (as in - plant it as soon as there was something to plant, not to run off and dig everything in sight before planting anything - the weeds will have come back on the first bit again and only depress you totally).
And in year 1, grow lots of what you like to eat and only a few experiments. There are plenty of years for those.

My mistake was rotovating my plot without applying roundup style weedkiller. I multiplied the numbers of horsetail weed and am still suffering the consequences. Follow the guide by Pigletwillie and don't rush into your new allotment.
Oh long term lesson don't get a plot next to a river, stream, brook, beck or any other form of flowing water that might flood onto your plot...

I think I already know what my worst mistake is... seeing my huge lottie and thinking 'yippee, I'll buy every seed known to mankind' but forgetting I need to clear it properly firstI was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" he said "Grab your things
I've come to take you home."
