  • Runner Beans

I'm planning to sow runner beans into large pots on my patio but i'm not sure when wound be best, or if it would be better to start them off inside in small pots and plant them out later
If i do start them off inside when is the best time.

    Hi Basil,
I think if you start your beans off inside it's May and for outside its June.If like me you just have window sills I would be inclined to sow them outside as they will catch up anyway. If started on a sill it is easy for them to get "leggy".
Imagination is everything, it is a preview of what is to become.

I always start beans off in pots. If I sow them direct, the slugs eat them as they germinate.

I don't grow runners - prefer French climbing - but like Two Sheds, I start them in pots in my cold greenhouse in mid April (but bring them in at night if there's a forecast of frost). You don't get gaps then. Every one a winner!

Peas should be fine Lauren. They are better from early sowings as you don't get pea moth caterpillars in them - seriously yukky!

I wouldn't even consider sowing beans until April, and then I sow them in toilet roll tubes in the cold greenhouse. They can't be put outside until there is absolutely (we hope) no risk of frost - usually considered to be May.
