  • Thining cabbage?

    Folks,

As i launch headlong into my mini-garden of containers, i arrived home the other day with a pot containing cabbage tundra. The pot is 10inches across and has 5 stems. Do these need to be transplanted? Should i split the plants?

Garrett, Tundra are a winter variety of cabbage. They grow very big and need to be spaced about 2 foot apart on our allotment. So yes they do need to be transplanted. They should be ready to eat in the autumn and they are supposed to keep well in the ground through the winter.

      Lesley,

Thanks for the reply, does that mean that i can crop them and keep them overwinter? Baring in mind that i have only a container garden, would i be best breaking up the plant or transplant whole?

When you say there are 5 stems in the pot do you mean 5 seedlings or one plant with 5 stems? If it is one plant then you can't split it and it will grow into one big cabbage. If it is 5 seedlings then they will need a pot each. Tundra cabbage will keep in good condition left in the pot in the garden until you are ready to eat it.
