I was wondering if there were any veggies that I could grow in pots / bags which also would not mind being in shade. My mum has given me a lot of patio veg planters and potato bags which I want to plant up and have standing in my back garden. However my garden is very long and thin with a 6 foot high hedge on one side and an apple tree in the middle of the lawn so although I have a couple of sunny spots most of the garden is in shade most of the time.

Most salad stuff is happy in the shade - they also don't mind pots. This would include the oriental veg - not just acres of lettuce!Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.

I used to have a very small north facing back garden. In pots I grew Runner Beans, Peas, Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Aubergines and Peppers! I only had sun a bit first thing then last thing but had good crops!Nestled somewhere in the Cambridgeshire Fens. Good soil, strong winds and 4 Giant Puffballs!
