Not wishing to spoil anyones fun .... but in WHsmiths today, Carol Excitable Klein's Book "Grow Your Own Veg" on special reduced from �16.99 to �5

It's a great book. That and Andi Cleverlys book (The Allotment Book) are well worth having.

At the moment (as of today, when my interest in being a lottie owner began) I have The Allotment Handbook (Caroline Foley) and Vegetable Gardening. The guy at the allotment has let me borrow his book called The Vegetable & Herb Expert (Dr D G Hessayon) which I am very impressed with to be honest.

Am I ok with what I've got, or shout i go with the one below? Althoug, for a fiver, one can't go wrong!!!

The Vegetable & Herb expert is worth having - only �4 at ASDA. Gives good advice on planting, diseases etc, so a useful reference. Carols book for a fiver is a good buy as well (I got the Clevely book at WH Smith for a tenner).

I've got Carol Klein's book as well. It wasn't the first one I bought, but it's one I refer to very often - well laid out, with a nice double-page spread on each vegetable, as well as some good tips for raising veg in a small area.

Ordered her new one last night (which has a seasonal planner) together with the vege and herb expert book.

Syanide, the Caroline Foley book is great and the Veg and Herb Expert is helpful for identifying diseases as it has clear pictures of all the nasties you're likely to find on the plot - most books give general, and often confusing descriptions - but it does tend to give advice on their eradication which leans towards the chemical rather than organic. I bought the Andi Cleverly book and loved it, the photographs are gorgeous. There are so many lovely books available today for the allotmenteer that you're spoilt for choice. When we first started the only thing available was a small booklet - more of a pamphlet really - which even at the time must have been 30 years out of date, either that or you could read the one chapter on veg growing which had been stuck in the back of a general gardening book. This sudden plethora of specialist books alone tells you how popular allotments are becoming, my plan is to buy as many as possible, just in case we fall from publishers' favour again, so I'm now off to W.H. Smith's for my �5 copy of the Carol Klein offering.....and you can bet I'll come home with something else too.

On the topic of bargains, Woolies have got half price on a lot of their garden stuff. A set of hand spade, fork and cutting thingy for �7.49. Stainless steel. Is that a good price?

Also a pepper growing kit for �2.99 (half price). Is that good for me to start with or should I stick with doing it all myself from scratch?

Also, Mr Fotherill seeds are buy one get on free, but I don't know how much they were each. I think either �1.99 or �2.99 each (depending on F1 or not I suppose). Good price with the offer??

I brought some of these seeds from Wollies, though I'd have a go at companion planting. I got the poached egg flower and marigolds, they are supposed to attract bees and other good insects on to the plot and help protect crops.
I will let you know how I get on .........

The seeds were about �1.70 upwards and you got the cheapest one free. Very reasonable

I had actually borrowed this book from the library to assess whether or not to buy it. I was fully prepared to pay a tenner for it the next time I went to a bookshop!
