  • Raised bed

I have just moved house. Today I decided to get going with the vegetable growing. There is a raised bed 21' x 9' with a dry stone wall surround and a depth of soil of 10". I put my fork in to find that it is build on top of an old concrete hard-standing. Does this matter? There is enough depth to the wall to add another 4" of soil. Also there is an unheated greenhouse can I be growing anything in it yet?

Drainage may well be an issue, if the concrete wasn't broken up first. In hot weather it will get as dry as a bone, and in winter it could well be waterlogged...

Also 10" is very shallow, and 14" isn't great.... Oh, and 9' is rather too wide for a raised bed (you should be able to reach the middle without walking on it).

Sorry for all the bad news

If it was me I think I'd move the soil and break up the concrete, tedious as that may sound.
    Resistance is fertile

      Raised bed demise

Thank you for answering - at least I haven't planted anything yet. I shall attempt to smash the thing up.
It will make a change from decorating!
