daft question from newbie

have planted some aubergine seeds, covered on windowsill that gets quite a lot of light just over a week ago but nothing seems to be happening would they fare better elsewhere such as a warm but light airing cupboard? if this is a really daft question please be gentle with the laughter

Don't feel daft paulab, I was going to ask the same question myself today. I rememerb something that I was told in the past, 'There are no daft questions, only daft answers'.

I planted a few things last week too. I fear I am getting too excited about growing veg that I have lost any sembalance of patience.

There's no such thing as a daft question here on the Vine (just have a look at some of mine!). We are all learning and Ive often found that someone has already asked the question I was wondering about!

I have just checked my growing book for this year and I planted 3 types of aubergine on 8 March, Calliope came through on 20th, Rosa Bianca on the 23rd and I am still waiting for Ichiban to put in an appearance. They take time!!!

seeds need warmth - seedlings (and plants) need light
light gives warmth, but so does a dark, warm airing cupboard

so *seeds* will be fine in an airing cupboard, but bring them out into the light when they sprout, otherwise the seedlings will shoot up quickly looking for the light

remember that many seeds are sown in soil/compost and covered, therefore in the dark
anyway .......

and be patient waiting for seeds to sprout - it all takes time ....

I planted some Aubergines - Black Beauty a couple of weeks ago, and still nothing showing through, but it did say on the packet that germination could take about 3 weeks

Very reassuring- mine haven't come though yet either!
Think the cold conservatory I've got them in is probably making them take longer, but should be ok- I managed ok last year with my aubergines, just can't remember how long they took to germinate!
I'm making a note of these things this year, to reassure me in years to come. Once they do come through, plant 'em in compost with lots of manure if you can- they like a lot of nutrition.

This is my first year growing stuff other than lettuce and toms, and I've started to keep a journal - maybe a bit anal, but I'm hoping that by this time next year I'll have a lottie, so hopefully it'll help remind me what I need to do and when

You lot have more patience than me - mine were through in 5-7 days in a heated propagator.

Yaaaaaaaay, they sprouted today!!!! I just checked - I sowed them on 28th March in an open tray on the window sill. This morning - still nothing - but then the sun came out, so I covered then with a plastic cover and popped them out in the sun and when I checked a few minutes ago, I've got one just starting to break through the soil I'm a happy bunny now

I can see I am going to fit in round here. I too am a very novice gardener and have been tripping up to the greenhouse every morning and evening in eager anticipation that my aubergines will have put in an appearance. As yet nowt! Only been waiting a week though. Patience is a virtue which I have been trying to foster. Not very good at it though! Got plenty of other seed action happening so expect to be a busy bee soon.

I will own up here to being the numbty who planted all of her courgette seeds only to read later that I should have planted a maximum of 6 unless I have a family of thousands to feed. I'll be the one disappearing under the courgette mountain of Co Durham later on in the year then.

Aubergines putting in a show now! Infact I've got a pot full of them! Next thing to worry about is thinning and transplanting I guess. HELP!
