  • leggy salad mix

I planted a container of salad mix and was really pleased when it all leapt into life; but think I might have killed it with kindness as it has all gone leggy. I've put it outside in the greenhouse [unheated] but just wondered if I really have commited saladicide or whether it will rejuvinate in the cooler habitat

May recover, shame you didn't post a picture. How leggy is it?

Dont know how to post picture - they're just over inch tall with stem like cress if that makes sense.

At that size, I wouldn't worry. The greenhouse will shorten and toughen them up.

I did the same with mine - they went a bit leggy even though in the minigreenhouse (had germinated indoors). So I just transplanted from modules into a large pot today, and put it out on the patio. I might replant the modules (slightly less densely!) tomorrow for succession (these were sown 2 weeks ago).

i experimented and planted saladmix and little gem both in garden and unheated sunny summerhouse (dont have green house just a bench) everything in garden germinated still waiting for summerhouse batch - all about a week ago. I thought it would be other way round, esp with cold and wind and rain we;ve been having round here lately.

My moon trial tells me that on average lettuce takes 15 days to germinate; this is in the Midlands in an unheated garage. Although when it was slightly warmer a couple of weeks back it only took 10.
