A near neighbour has had some Cyprus trees cut down and shredded, (sensible guy.) What I want to know is; am I safe using the chippings as a mulch? Do I need to compost them before I use them.

I use wood chippings as paths on both allotments and find no problem at all. As they are naturally a little acidic you can in theory increase the acidity of your soil over several years by using it but only very minimally, in fact so minimally as to make not a jot of difference in real terms as its only just acidic. It is great at detering slugs (especially when dry) and weeds from sprouting every where.
