I'm sure there's a pub somewhere that has a yearly nettle eating contest...

Edit: I'm such a muppet - I always get nettles and thistles muddled up. Sorry.

In my first year of growing strawbs from seed [taken from an alpine strawb at a national trust house we visited]; I was dead excited as one seedling seemed to be growing - and growing and wow - it was 6 inches high before I realised I'd grown a fabulously handsome; stinging nettle.

          How we laughed.

          This was only last year.

I'll stick to the day job!

We have all done mad things as part of our learning curves...
I wasn't used to the different weed on my new allotment and had sprinkled some flower seeds straight onto the soil.
I spent 3 weeks tenderly weeding out the 'weeds' only to find that I'd left in a weed which was new to me , but not a flower seedling was in sight!!!

I did the opposite. I chopped off what I thought was a thistle only to later remember planting a Cardoon! I now know they look very similar and I've set some more this year, hopefully they won't get the chop!

One year I was happily hoeing all the "weeds" in my tomato bed when I suddenly remembered that that was where I had sown the marigolds for companion planting - doh!

Is there a site that shows what different plants look like as they grow? I can see my onions and garlic are different to weeds, but my potatoes and peas I'm not so sure about!

There was discussion on here recently about starting a reference thread on identifying young plants - I'll have a look round to see if any progress has been made...

                        OK, here we go:

                        http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...nce_14984.html

No potatoes or peas at the moment, though. Unfortunately my digital camera is poorly at the moment, or I'd add photos myself. In the meantime...

Potato plants have very dark green leaves - they first come through as sturdy rosettes about the size of a 50p piece. Pea leaves are much more delicate, a bit like clover leaves, and the young plants soon start to produce tendrils for climbing:

                          Much appreciated.

I've been looking at Videojug clips, but not many of them show the plants in detail.
