Do you rely on what the soil or compost looks or feels like to decide when to water or do you have a regular regime? Likewise with feeding plants, how do you remember what to feed and when? Do you write it down or do they all get the same thing at the same time?

i'm a bit like Jardiniere, I water if it hasn't rained. Re. feeding...I try to be regular with tomatoes etc...but with everything else, I start off well and then it dwindles, although in my 2nd year of growing veg I'm trying to be better! Last week put in bone meal etc but not sure if I'll remember to feed the flowers again!"A cat sees no good reason why it should obey another animal, even if it does stand on two legs."

Problem is that some plants like loads of water and some like to keep their feet dry. Some like to keep their leaves dry but need lots of water at the roots. Although relatively new to growing veg, I've been growing flowers for many years and it always amazes me how little water many plants require. There are no 'hard and fast rules'. A plant that will quite happily survive in the shade for weeks with little water will quickly keel over if left in the sun, but a good way to kill a plant is to overwater it. There's no one fix for all growing plants. Treat each plant as an individual as they all have different requirements. Then there's feeding ...I you'st to have a handle on the world .. but it BROKE!!

You don't need to water and feed as often as you might think: http://www.which.co.uk/files/applica...-445-90877.PDFAll gardeners know better than other gardeners." -- Chinese Proverb.
