  • Staggered seed sewing and planting out.

In my attempt to do something right for a change, and avoid the glut situation i have been working on a staggered seed sewing routine. so long as it looks half feasible in accordance with the sewing times on the seed packets i have been spacing out either seed sewings or planting out of seedlings.

Sooooo for example....carrots have been sewn into pots once every 4 weeks for the last 12 weeks so far and i will continue at 4 week intervals until the end of June (as that is what the packet say about when to sew).
Half my summer cabbage seedlings, and colli's have been in the ground for 2 weeks and i will keep the other half in modules and plant them out in about 4 weeks time.
I have 8 runner bean seedlings just showing their heads through under cover in pots ( will plant out in a couple of weeks when its safe then sew 8 more seeds so they will be ready to plant out in June.
Courgettes are one planted every 4 weeks until i have 4 plants up and running, i do however have all my tomato plants ready to plant out together because i want chutney ones too.

Am i barking up the right tree with this, or am i basically waisting my time and they will all pretty much turn up together anyways?

Hello Wren, Yes, you've got it about right. Some later sown seeds might catch up with early ones and come at the same time, but over the season, sow a few every few weeks to keep them coming. Or you can plant bigger amounts and pick and eat every second one as babies and let the others grow on. Do it the way that suits you. There's no right way. Just enjoy.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

        Hi
I do this as much as possible, but tend to ignore the packets as such for stuff that can grow during the winter; so I'll still keep putting carrots out for most of the autumn. then you stand a chance of getting much earlier carrots the next year. The only problem with them is the dreaded carrot fly.

you system sounds brilliant though, and once you get into it and find what works - you'll know exactly what you need through the year.

Don't forget winter lettuce as well; if you buy the right type you can have year round lettuce as well as the usual crops.

Rusty stands well all winter here ... the ones that I planted inbetween my broad beans are twice the size of the ones out in the open (and less dirty too), so a measure of protection is a good idea.

BTW, you should sow your seeds, don't go trying to sew them

Thats a very good point carrot fingers are a bugger to type with.

i will keep on with the staggard *sowings* then maybe stretch the boundries a bit with them carrots as you mention zazen as i am down here in the south o England.

Im not keen on lettuce though, one lettuce a year is enough for me, and i cant be doing with growing things i dont like so i will give them a miss ta . i look at all these lettuce pics an wonder at the waste o space..lol..
