  • Planting out time?

This run of warm weather has got me thinking that it must be about time to plant out all those pot plants that be brought on from seed. Some are now groaning in their pots, and have spent the last week outside hardening off.

Has anyone else out their the urge to plant out yet, or are you all holding back?
I know that some of you lovely folk live in the north, so may be expecting a change in the night temperatures, but what about you lovely people in the south. Have you been brave and planted out yet?

Definitely - I took all my French Beans up the lottie today with the intention to plant them out, but them a friend appeared with a bottle of wine, and it was too nice a day and...well they're still in their pots, but outside in their pots. I'm gradually moving everything outside. I tend to have a few plants that act as experiments - I'll put one of them out and see what happens. Did this with my first tomato last week and it seems to be thriving, so I'll put another one out of a different type this week, see how that does. We're in the middle of a city in a fairly sheltered spot, so the nights don't tend to get too cold anymore. If I was in the countryside I would be more cautious, I think.

Beans, peas, toms, sweetcorn and courgettes all out. I batch sow mine so if it does go badly wrong I have plan B.

Lettuce, beetroot, some toms have all germinated outdoors. Loads of toms hardened off and looking ready to be put out when I've got time [so much couch grass to weed first].

All brassicas are hardening off and just waiting for me to sort their new bed out.

My broccoli, cauliflower and mange tout have been out for a while... put my french beans out yesterday. I've also got some lettuce in a tub which I am now leaving outside. I moved my herbs (basil, coriander, parsley, chives, chervil & mint) outside last week and they are all okay apart from the basil which has keeled over and died... think I'll try again with that because it was doing really well in the greenhouse.

Hardening off outside in the day but the only tender crop I've planted out is my first lot of dwarf french beans - a borlotto - which is under a cloche. East coast winds can be a bit nippy here!

Before you put too many tender plants out, have a look at this
