  • what's the best way to support broadies

    hi grapes

I was just wondering if you could offer any tips on the easiest way to support b beans ? I have planted two rows alongside my garden fence. Are canes the best way or trellis ?

    thanks

    Littlewin -

I have broad beans in a recycling box up against a fence - tho I'm not using the fence as support as they won't reach it. I've put 3' canes in the box around the edges and threaded garden twine between them. This seems to be working OK so far!

Broadies don't produce tendrils like peas, and don't wind round things like climbing beans do, so the trellis idea is a waste of time. Just put some canes in the ground and tie string round them to make a sort of enclosure. This should stop them blowing over. You may need to add another lot of string as they grow.
