Is it safe yet to remove the barrier from around my carrots?

I removed my fleece type covering around 5 weeks ago and things seem to be going well. Am I right in thinking the carrot fly have a second "batch" in August - and if so, should/when should I cover my carrots and parnships up again? Dont want to fall foul of yet another "pesky little varmint!" dexterdog

Dexterdog you are right in thinking that you should cover your carrots as there is a second lot of carrot fly now. I would get covering my carrrots up now

Keep them covered perminantly...its the only way to beat the little beggers!

I keep my stuff in my front garden and I am reluctant to use cloches and tunnels and fleece - it looks so unsightly. I am afraid everything is just taking it's chances! Will have to invest in some square foot cloches!

How far north does the carrot fly get? I was banking on it not getting this far north.

Carrot fly is alive and well in north yorkshire. All the old boys at our allotments cover their carrots all year so I have used cloches with great success!

i am a relative novice, what exactly do carrot fly do - how can you tell what has eaten the carrots. i had a bed full of carrots - just germinated (at the stage of two little leaves) and the next week they were al gone - (i only get to the veg once a week). Also, as i dont get there very often, would peas be a bad choice for next year - i live in the south - London so not much surplus water!!!

I'm no expert but that sounds more like snails or slugs ate your seedlings. I lost more than half of mine to snails and I'm out there hunting daily. Pea plants are pretty popular as a snail snack too. Maybe you could cover them with cloches while they get started?
