  • Mealy Cabbage Aphids

    Hi

I have got some red cabbages, cauliflowers and sprouts growing, all of seem which have been affected to varying degrees by this

The Royal Horticultural Society - Gardening Advice: Mealy Cabbage Aphid

I am not going to be able to get to a garden centre until next weekend to buy any of the recommended remedies - are there any home made remedies I can try?

Other than these aphids the plants seem to be doing really well - there are mini cauliflower curds forming, the cabbages are hearting up and the sprout plants are showing the beginnings of tiny sprouts. This is my first year growing and I really don't want to lose them

If I end up using a non-organic pesticide we will still be able to eat the veg?
    Never say never!

If you wash the veg and then peel it, it will be safe to eat. Most veg are cooked too, so this will destroy the stuff.

Try mixing 2 cups of water, 1 onion, and 2 cloves of garlic in a blender. Strain out the pulp and spray on the leaves of your infested plants. Or do what I usually do and squash the little blighters!

Squash between finger and thumb. (Use Marigolds if you're squeamish).

Just found some evidence of this on my cauliflowers. Sprayed with garlic and washing up liquid so I hope that kills them (the bugs not the cauliflowers)
