  • Knowing your onions

    Hello

Just had despatch notice form DT Brown to advise me that my Onion sets will be sent to me early August. I haven't grown onions before but tried garlic last year which is currently drying in my greenhouse & i am so pleased with it that i thought i'd try onions too.

I went for the variety called "Radar" but really wanted a bit of advice on how to treat them please as my veg patch has quite clayey soil. With my garlic i planted them in little pots over winter in my mini greenhouse then put them in the veg patch early spring. Should i just treat the onions the same?

Any advice is greatly appreciated, thanks xx

The onions should be okay straight into the ground where you want them to grow - my soil is quite clay-ey too and I'm a bit further north than you, and mine have been fine in the ground over winter. You could mix a little bit of compost (left-over multi-purpose will do) into the soil where you put each one in, just to improve the drainage a bit, but it's not essential

Hi - I planted my onion sets (Red & Japanese) in December and have just had a great crop. Onions & garlic should be fine in the ground over winter. My plot's got a few pockets of clay and last year a few onions and garlic got a bit of white rot, so it's a good idea to do what you can to improve drainage.
