  • Yet another newbie on strawberries

Well I think my strawberries have come to an end, even tho they still have healthy green leaves.
But as a newbie I would like to know what I should do next.
Do I just cut them back ? If so will they grow again next year ?
Is there anything I should do to protect them through the winter?

I know these are silly questions to some but hey Im a newbie and would like some pointers please

I was pleased with the strawberries I got as it was my first time

    Any advice welcome

    Hi Shaz,

A lot of people cut them back at this time of year but not too hard because they need a little protection from the frosts. I still have flowers on some of mine but I think that depends on variety.

The second year, the crop is better than the first and the third year is even better. Plant any runners to increase your crop and that's all I know about strawberries. someone much more knowledgeable will be along soon.

I've just come back in from chopping my strawbs back. The only leaves I've left are the new growth this year. I've chopped all runners off and put into water to grow, they will then get replanted back in the ground before the onset of the frosts. They will also get fleeced during the winter.

I tend to leave mine (mainly as I'm too busy to do anything else with them), they are 2 year old plants and come the spring I will pot up the runners which have rooted and pop these into a new bit of ground (which is the same as I did last year - apart from I gave the runners away!)
After they have fruited next year I will compost the 3 year old plants and just keep this years babies
