Catapillar / Butterfly Eggs

Can anyone tell me if the "Soapy Water" method killes the eggs or is it just the catapillars or vise versa. as I really don't want to kill another plant

I'm no expert but the only sucsessful method i have found is to go round and squish the eggs/catipillars
