Green to Red?

  • Green to Red?

    HI.

    I have quite a few big peppers on my plant now and a couple of chillis.

    They are all still green even tho they are big enough to eat, when do they go red?

    It's not a given that a green chilli will eventually turn red. But plenty of sunshine, warmth and time certainly help. Out of about 30 Apache chillis I have only one that has turned red.

      It takes flippin' ages. Peppers and toms, both take an age.

      If there was an exact science I'd be a millionaire!

      They turn quicker in greenhouses, if that's any help.

        Mine are in my greenhouse, guess i just got to wait for the sunshine then, not much chance of that right now with all this rain!

          I have both Red and Green sweet pepper varieties (Red Bell and Green Bell from memory). The Red one is definitely keener to go red. But I reckon if you leave them on the plant for long enough to go red it slows down the overall production of the plant, so pick them green unless you really need them to be red.

            could you put a banana by it maybe?? don't they make things go redder quicker because of etylene??? or something like that

              My sweet peppers are still quite small, but a couple of them have unexpectedly turned red . My chillis on the other hand (Cayenne) are huge and don't seem to be changing colour at all... I thought that if we picked them green, they wouldn't have any taste or be hot enough, but I was mistaken so that is what we have been doing.

                When i see the first hint of the peppers or toms starting to turn red i pick them and they turn red anyway after that. You can also put them in a brown paper bag with a bannana and that will help them to turn quicker.

                    They will taste much sweeter, and probably firmer, if left on the bush.

                    Dunno about peppers though, we just eat them green - unless I miss one and it gets left on the bush until it turns red

                      I have green chillis, (first thing I have ever grown!) and they are certainly hot enough!

                        I have some really well shaped shaped sweet peppers that are still green, I want to enter them in our local veg show on sep 1st - will they be red by then? If not can I enter green ones?

                          They should be starting to turn red about now Mr&MrsB. Be patient.
