  • help needed with onions

    Hi all

I hve been trying to successfully grow onions for a few months now to no avail.
The seem to get onion fly or just seem to die away and when I pull them up they are just the bulbs I planted a few weeks before with a few roots on them.

I have one pot of shallots that still look vaguely healthy that are in a pot that were not near the onion fly ridden ones. should these be left for longerto see how they turn out as it seems a shame to throw them out or is it me doing something wrong? I didnt think it would onions that I would have the problems with out of all the other things i've grown this yr.

Thanks alot for any help in advance!

To try and counter the onion fly, cover your onions with fleece or net curtains, making sure it is tightly fixed to the ground but with sufficient loose to allow the onions to grow.
My own onions are not as good this year as they were last year - having said that they went 6 weeks with no rain so were bound to be slow starters. They are still growing, so we shall wait and see the outcome.

half my onions this year were good, half were pathetic little golf balls.
I put it down to poor soil on the bad side. The best onions were grown in soil enriched with rotted garden compost.

It was an amazing year for onions last year, they seemed to love the warm, dry spring, followed by standing all summer in floodwater. This year they've been really late and at the end of June I thought we weren't going to get a crop at all. Then in the last month or so they've filled out nicely, but still no sign of going over so I'm hoping for an Indian summer to dry them out. If the shallots are still healthy I'd leave them until they show signs of die-back before you harvest them, they're probably just late and enjoying this wonderful summer we've had here in Yorkshire.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.
