  • Sad spring onions

I planted some spring onions in my greenhouse and they came up just fine. Now all the green bits are laying down like flat grass
Tonight a friend told me they should be outside and its probably too hot in the greenhouse, but posts on here said it was ok to keep them in the greenhouse

So do I put the trough outside or leave them where they are and hope they perk up? Confused of Surrey

    Thanks in advance

I only ever over winter spring onions in a greenhouse, so not sure about what has gone wrong with yours. You could try spraying with a diluted solution of viagra, that should get them standing up again!

Fiona, I wouldn't put the spring onions in the greenhouse at this time of year. They're very hardy. I would put them outside now. You've nothing to loose by the sound of it. How could they do worse .
For next year you could start them in the greenhouse Jan or Feb, grow them on, harden them off and plant out.

        Spring Onions

        Hi Fiona,

Have to agree onions should be outside. However my onions (Lisbon White) are outside and are flattened - not by the heat but the rain. They are growing fine, just not upright!

You can start your onions off in the greenhouse, but in summer it is far too hot for them.

ok thanks all. Is it worth popping em outside and seeing what happens? Live and learn
Does the leaf salad need to come outside when its bigger too?

Fiona, your leaf salad never needed to be in the greenhouse at this time of year. It likes fairly cool conditions. Be brave and put it all outside.

Fiona, we're all Numpties to begin with.
I planted mint with my spuds in my first year ... now it's out-growing even the bindweed

I started my last batch of spring onions a few weeks ago in the GH to get them germinated but as soon as they started to grow I put them outside. As soon as I get room I'll plant them out into the ground and let them grow through the winter. Out of interest, I planted up some summer bedding plants in some old dog beds and put in some spring onions at the back for a bit of height, they are now enormous!

My pot of spring onions have been out all summer and transplanted some into my raised veggie bed.

Have also been able to cook with them.
