Can I plant anything now?

Hi everyone, new here and to the world of growing my own. we've finally got some (quite small) space to grow a little veg and i'd like to get going asap. I have seen that I should be able to plant some salad crops, etc but am unsure how to go about it. Can I buy plugs at a local garden centre - for some instant gratification? Anything else I can plant too?

Hi Jammie.
There've been 100s of posts on this subject recently. Have a go with your search button.
Rusty lettuce springs to mind. Also Japanese onions. Aquedulce broadies in a few weeks.

Now is the time to plant overwintering onions, they should sell the sets at the garden centre, also garlic and winter lettuces.
I don't recall seeing plugs at the garden centre at this time of year, think that may be a mail order thing only as it's not really as popular to start things in the autumn as it is the spring, there may be broad beans tho later into the autumn.

Where are you in the country, it helps to put it in your profile as the climate is different from Scotland to Dorset, although recently it all seems to be wet.....

Thanks for that. I'll update the profile now. I did have a search but most of what I found was about greenhouse growing or harvesting.

Just to let people know. I planted up some winter onions, winter lettuce, white broccoli and broad beans. I'd bet good money at least 1/2 of them will die but that's all part of the learning process I suppose ;-)

Jammie, I wouldn't be sowing broad beans while it's still relatively warm ... they'll put on too much lanky growth and be prey to evil winter winds and cold.

Best to sow them around Hallowe'en, so they're about 4 inches high when t'winter comes.

Darn. Oh well, still have about 1/2 a pack left. I'll wait for the ones I sowed (sewed?) today to pop up and i'll pick them out and replant come halloween.

English is my mother tongue and I swear I still don't understand why we spell things the way we dop sometimes ;-) No wonder people who learn it as a second language get confused.

Totally oftopic, but thanks for this one. English is my 5th language and get confused with these kinda words..

So I will be sowing my broadbeans near Halloween (was thinking of sowing them next weekend but will hold my horses and be patient)
