  • Leaf mould

    HI there

I am hoping to make my own leaf mulch, but not sure how...I have a couple of compost bins ....I seem to recall that leaf mould can be made in bags....is it simply you fill bag/bin with leaves only?
    thanks

Collect all fallen leaves, pile into either compost bin or black plastic binbag. Keep adding leaves. If in compost bin with drainage no further attention needed for at least a year. (If in black plastic bin bag then make drainage holes at the bottom of the bag). Again leave for a year. It's well worth the wait!!

Make sure they're damp!!!! If they're dry they will never rot down

(I know it's unlikely due to our fab weather but I thought I'd say...)

I have a huge pile at the moment down the allotment. I made a ring of chicken wire and in they went. I put cardboard around the sides to aid keeping them from blowing away.
I put an old carpet over top with bits of old wood to weigh it down.
I try and keep them damp too. I also add wee to speed up the process. It is still slow though because of all the carbon in the leaves.

I've been out every evening this week (in the dark .. I couldn't stand the ridicule if anyone saw me) sweeping up leaves from the bike lane.

            1) fill a black binliner with wet leaves
            2) tie up bag, a label is a good idea "leafmould: ready in Spring 2010"
            3) puncture bag for drainage
            4) put away behind shed for at least a year
            5) when dark & crumbly, spread it on your beds for a fantastic soil conditioner

Rule for leaf mould: When you think you have enough, you've got about a quarter of what you need, so fill lots of bags.(I use builders bags,1 cu mtr), in goes all the leaves, twigs, brushings up of loose soil and the odd shovel full of equipoo.
