  • Best suppliers/catalogues

Which seed catalogues or online suppliers are best for general veg and fruit? I should be getting my first allotment soon and will need to get some supplies.

    Cheers,

    Hi Flytrap,

I usually get my seeds and veg plants from Suttons and so far have been really pleased (leeks brought as plants were much more advanced than the ones I grew from seed and i got at least double the quantity they advertised), however I have just had Kings Seeds catalogue through which looks really clear, has lots of info and some interesting varieties, so might try them too.

I did order the Organic Seed catalogue, but I found it really hard to use, so won't bother again.

            Hi Flytrap

I've only been doing this growing lark for about 18 months, but I've learned during that time that there are very few definitive answers.

For me, I've found that there are some suppliers that do certain things better than others and vice versa ad infinitum (ooh look at me all latin like).

I've found that there are plenty of "general" suppliers - Thomson & Morgan, Dobies, Suttons et al, but you will probably find that you'll discover several specialist suppliers that will suppliment your general requirements.

Good luck with whatever you decide though - it's all fun.

just an idea about seed potatoes - Tuckers seeds are I find quite cheap for seed potatoes.....and only charge you £6 postage for up to 30kg (sorry Northern Scotland & Ireland it costs you more)

                example 3kg Rocket earlies - Suttons £6.95, DT Brown £6.45 Tuckers £3.95

so if you require quite a few KG's or can get a few of you together it will not take many KG's to work out quite a bit cheaper, as the other ctaalogues seem to charge you a price with postage for each 3kg pack. They have a huge selection for you to chose from and I have always found them excellent to deal with.

Tuckers (as with other seed companies) will also let you order as a "society" for your allotments and you will get an approximate (dont quote me) discount of 40% on catalogue price, subject to minimum orders. If somebody can be bothered to organise this it is a good way of saving money.

                  Hi,Flytrap
Funny because I wanted to ask the same question.
All the seeds I had so far were from Suttons-they all germinate no problem.
Next year I'm going to grow some veg from Great Vegetable Seeds from The Real Seed Catalogue and Suttons as well.Thompson and Morgan have good seeds as well but to me they are a bit expensive.
If you have anyy suggestions where to get good quality seeds please share them.

I've only ever used Thompson and Morgan (advertised on this site....) and they've been great. Simple to use especially via the internet and delivered on time. Seeds have performed well I'll definitely use again.

I also use Wyvales garden centre for other items and I bought spuds from B&Q this year. I'm considering using Seeds of Italy (Franchi?) as well next year for some of the different varieties they supply.

Actually, you're not wrong, I bought a packet of 'value' beetroot seed from B&Q this year and had brilliant germination (better than my Sutton's Boltardy)

Well, this year I'm going to try seedsbysize. Seems a bit complicated, but I hope not too bad.

I gave up on trying to work out seeds by size, it was unnecessarily complicated but have used Organic Cat, Real Seeds, Kings, Tuckers, T&M, Suttons etc with no problems.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
