  • Best place to get topsoil?

I have finally managed to get on my local freecycle group so am keeping an eye out for bits on there, but I am desperately in need of topsoil for next spring, we are on a foot of soil on top of heavy clay, and up until now I have been using raised beds filled with compost, but it gets really expensive every time i build a new bed.

I checked out the local friday ad, nothing, where is the best place to get topsoil? I don't drive so delivery is essential, anyone in my area know of a decent relatively inexpensive supplier.

sussex is so not the garden of england it seems and shoreham sux!

yep, thats the friday ad for us.

i am just having a depressed day i think.
there is so much i want to do, and not to make things fancy, just to be eble to grow my own stuff to cut out outgoings, but the garden is so small, and crap soil, that the compost required is an enormous expense, if i could just get it sorted to be fit to grow in, i would feel better i think.
i just dont know enough, cant afford begger all, and don't drive so can't pick up freebies.
some days life sux a little.
oh well tomorrow is another day

course the other thing is I could make my own compost to improve the soil ( or create it I guess) but again, no flamin room for a decent heap, and not enough lawn left, or peeling ect to make a decent amount

told ya i was depressed today going to open a bottle of wine and try to stop fretting i think.

          Hi Bride,

Cheer up mate, we all have bad days - they're there to make the good ones seem better

If it's any help (to cheer you up, that is) the macerator on our waste pipe is playing up, so we're having to empty the bath and sink with a bucket, and chuck it under the conifers, and send any laundry to my Mum next door. So we only have the loo going through the waste.

I've had to cancel 2 gardening jobs today, coz the Dogs got the sqirts again, so I had to take him back to the vet, then come home and clean carpets again. Got that done and ready to go gardening, so guess what - now its chucking it down with rain and my customers have both said not to bother! That's a real pain coz I need the money coz the car needs fuel.

Sold some stuff on eBay at the weekend, so got a few quid to go in the bank, but looks like its all goin on diesel for the car and antibiotics for the dog!

          I think I'll join you in a glass - Cheers! X

                  Go for it!

There's something distinctly pleasurable about snot smilies - good childish fun!

Why can't I use more than 4 smilies, anyway?

of course PRACTICLE advice is also welcome

like how do you turn leaves into soil please, cos i have free access to loads of those.

on reflection if i tell you what i have got, you tell me what to do with it?

bad soil, on top of heavy solid clay, now the soil can and will be improved, but the clay means NO drainage, which means when we get a wet summer anything with roots drowns, trust me I have been here 12 years this is the truth, i have even lost young trees this way.

now, i have access to loads of leaves, and some, but not loads of, rabbit, droppings hay etc, not enough stuff to make a decent compost bin, although i do own one, i can't fill it, let alone produce enough to fix my problem.

i was considering digging the leaves and rabbit stuff in and praying, i mean if you can grow veg in a straw bale etc ???
i have enough leaves available to keep some aside to do proper leaf mold, but thats going to be two years coming.

or should i just stick to homebrewing and give up my grandious plans for a few veg to eke out our budget? ( ok slightly over the top, i realise this, but a few tubs does not a summers worth of dinners make)

as you've no room for a compost heap, shove everything in a black bag, and wee on it lots ..... it should hopefully break down by spring ish ...... how about horse poo, or your local council compost dept, or put notices up in shop windows.
