HUGE potatoe harvest!

I can only offer the advice that my Dad used,it worked in Leicestershire in the 1970's.When digging up the main crop ,he put 3 or 4 smaller ones in the soil in a cold frame and they grew.I don't believe he did any feeding and I can't remember much watering going on either.They gave enough for one meal for the 5 of us.I don't know what variety they were,sorry,but he did like King Edwards.

So, is anyone going to try and grow new spuds for next Christmas?

Yes! I grew them for xmas 2008 in the greenhouse, Nicola and carlingford, very nice. I lined the greenhouse with cardboard to keep the frost out.

I tried to grow xma pots in 2007, they looked great from the foliage point of view, but had the same results with very little potatoes. However I planted some potatoes in Jan / Feb (can't remember to long ago) and I got a bumper crop at the end of April. I am going to plant some rocket potatoes today, I have been trying to warm the soil up in the greenhouse with some polythene sheeting. So watch this space!

I'll try again Spudstacker - maybe put down a few in a bin in the next few weeks.

I had 2 bags with 7 tubers between them - harvested when we got back from family over Christmas. Got enough for 1 dinner and a spoonful of tiddlers which we had boiled but ate after frying to reheat the next day at lunch.

Wouldn't hvae been enough for Christmas dinner even for the 3 of us, but would have been nice to have then. Frost got mine early too.

Still having an internal debate about doing it again - the toddler and I had great fun rooting through the tubs though for results!!

I had great success with potatoes in big black bins and in old compost bags last year but those planted-for-christmas didnt even sprout. They were all treated the same, so obviously the later ones didnt like the season - not sure if I'll try again, will probably stick to the right time of year and try to store some instead this year.

Loving the idea of cocktail potatoes thoug ....
